​​​The following process describes the requirements for Initial and Recertification for Mobile Intensive Care Nurse.

SCEMSA counter hours are; Tuesday thru Thursday 0800-1200.
 

Initial Certification: If the applicant is applying for certification for the first time, the following must be submitted:

  1. Apply online at https://actonline.saccounty.net Once you register your account, you will be able to log in and apply for your certification. Online application instructions found here.
  2. Evidence of a valid and current license as a Registered Nurse in California.
  3. Evidence of a valid and current ACLS card according to the standard of the AHA.
  4. Evidence of a valid and current PALS card according to the standard of the AHA.
  5. Government issued Photo Identification.
  6. Evidence of a minimum of six months experience on Department Letterhead endorsed by the Manager or Pre-Hospital Care Coordinator as a RN within the emergency department of a Sacramento County Base hospital.
  7. Provide evidence of successful completion of a MICN course in Sacramento County of a California LEMSA.
    a. If course is attended outside of Sacramento County, the MICN shall attend the Sacramento County EMS Agency Policy/Protocol Review Class and/or successfully complete the MICN exam with SCEMSA accredited MICN Course.
  8. Documentation of completion of an Advanced Life Support (ALS emergency response vehicle observation experience consisting of direct observation of at least eight (8) hours, which must include at least two (2) patient contacts in which the patient is assessed. If two (2) patient contacts are not completed, two (2) ALS scenarios will be conducted by the paramedic within the eight (8) hour observation period.  The ALS emergency response vehicle observation experience shall be completed with a ground-based SCEMSA designated ALS provider operating within the 9-1-1 response system. 
    a. If a candidate has a valid MICN certification from another county, provide proof of completion of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency response vehicle observation experience consisting of direct observation of at least four (4) hours, which must include at least two (2) patient contacts in which the patient is assessed.  If two (2) patient contacts are not completed, two (2) ALS scenarios will be conducted by the paramedic within the four (4) hour observation period.  the ALS emergency response vehicle observation shall be completed with a ground-based SCEMSA designated ALS provider operation within the 9-1-1 response system.
  9. Upload a passport style photo of yourself for the SCEMSA Accreditation Card or come in to the office where staff can take the photo for free and upload it to your application.  Counter hours are Tuesday - Thursday 0800-1200.
Recertification: Only candidates who are currently certified in Sacramento County are eligible for recertification and the following must be submitted:
  1. Apply online at https://actonline.saccounty.net  Once you register your account, you will be able to log in and apply for your certification.  Online application instructions found here.
  2. Evidence of a valid and current Sacramento County MICN certification card.
  3. Evidence of a valid and current license as a Registered Nurse in California.
  4. Evidence of a valid and current ACLS card according to the standard of the AHA.
  5. Evidence of a valid and current PALS card according to the standard of the AHA.
  6. Government issued Photo Identification.
  7. Provide proof of having 12 CE's in SCEMS approved classes:
    a. Obtain a minimum of eight (8) hours of instructor based credit of prehospital focused education. Prehospital education may be fulfilled by the following means:
    1) Run reviews or prehospital focused education courses
    2) SCEMSA Policy, Protocol and Procedure Update Classes
    b. Provide proof of completion of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency response vehicle observation experience consisting of direct observation of at least four (4) hours, which must include at least two (2) patient contacts in which the patient is assessed.  If two (2) patient contacts are not completed, two (2) ALS scenarios will be conducted by the Paramedic within the four (4) hour observation period.  The ALS emergency response vehicle observation experience shall be completed with a ground-based SCEMSA designated ALS provider operating within the 911 response system.
  8. Proof of employment on Department Letterhead endorsed by the Manager or Pre-Hospital Care Coordinator of a Sacramento County Base Hospital emergency department within the last six (6) months.
  9. Upload a passport style photo of yourself for the SCEMSA Accreditation Card or come in to the office where staff can take the photo for free and upload it to your application.  Counter hours are Tuesday - Thursday 0800-1200.
 For a lapse of MICN certification from one (1) day to (12) months: 
  1. Provide a copy of a valid and current licensure as a Registered Nurse in California. 
  2. Provide a copy of a valid and current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) card, according to the standards of the American Heart Association. 
  3. Provide a copy of a valid and current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) card according to the standards of the American Heart Association. 
  4. Provide a letter of verification from a manager or prehospital care coordinator within the last six (6) months, of current employment at a Sacramento County Base Hospital Emergency Department.
  5.  Provide proof of having obtained twelve (12) hours of continuing education approved by the local EMS Agency as follows: a. a. Obtain a minimum of eight (8) hours instructor based credit of prehospital focused education. Prehospital focused education may be fulfilled by the following means:
    1) Run reviews or prehospital focused education courses
    2) SCEMSA Policy, Protocol and Procedure Update Classes
    b. Provide proof of completion of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency response vehicle observation experience consisting of direct observation of at least four (4) hours, which must include at least two (2) patient contacts in which the patient is assessed. If two (2) patient contacts are not completed, two (2) ALS scenarios will be conducted by the Paramedic within the four (4) hour observation period. The ALS emergency response vehicle observation experience shall be completed with a ground-based SCEMSA designated ALS provider operating within the 911 response system. 
  6. Provide a current dated letter from a Sacramento County Base Hospital Emergency Department of successfully passing a supervised base evaluation. 
  7. Provide proof of completing an additional 1.0 continuing education hours for each month in lapsed status rounded up to the nearest month. 
  8. Provide a government issued photo ID for identification purposes. 
  9. Upload a passport style photo of yourself or come in to SCEMSA during counter hours, and staff will take your photo for the SCEMSA Certification card. 
  10. ​Pay all applicable fees established by SCEMSA.

MICN Inactive Status: An MICN may be classified as inactive if that person does not meet the requirements for continuing MICN certification and whose certification has not yet expired.

        1. An MICN certified in the County of Sacramento shall be classified inactive for any of the following:
            a. Not employed by a current Sacramento County Base Hospital Emergency Department.
            b. To reactivate out of an inactive status, a nurse shall:​
                 1) Provide a current dated letter to Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency (SCEMSA) of   verification, from a manager or prehospital care coordinator within the last six (6) months of current employment at a Sacramento County Base Hospital Emergency Department.
