Monkeypox (MPX)

Since mid-May, cases of monkeypox (MPX) have been reported from several countries that are non-endemic for this rare disease, including the United States. Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH) continues to work on identifying and monitoring contacts of cases to prevent further transmission.

About Monkeypox (MPX)

Isolation and Close Contact Guidance

  • Home Isolation for persons confirmed to have MPX (Spanish) (August 25, 2022)
  • Close Contacts for persons who have had close contact with a confirmed or suspected case of MPX.  If you believe you are a close contact of someone with MPX, call (916) 875-5881 to speak with a Public Health Nurse.

Vaccine Information

  • Some individuals may benefit from getting a two dose MPX vaccine series (JYNNEOS) as a form of prevention.                                                         Smallpox/Monkeypox Vaccine Information Statement | CDC
  • According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, JYNNEOS is indicated for prevention of smallpox and MPX disease.
  • Since no vaccine is 100 percent effective, it is important for individuals to reduce their risk of potential exposures to MPX both before and after being vaccinated.
  • Updated 11/22/2022: Vaccine providers can offer the JYNNEOS vaccine to patients who may be at risk and persons who request vaccination. Emphasis is on vaccination of priority groups.
  • Individuals who received an initial dose of JYNNEOS can receive their second dose at least 28 days after their first dose at one of the clinics listed below.  Note that some clinics require appointments or may have limited vaccine supply and don't forget to bring your vaccination record.
