Crisis Stabilization

Program Overview 

The Mental Health Treatment Center (MHTC) is a County-operated locked mental health facility. It provides short-term psychiatric care and crisis stabilization for people experiencing a serious mental health emergency. 

The Mental Health Treatment Center (MHTC) includes two programs located within the same facility. They work together to stabilize individuals and support safe transitions to other mental health services, when appropriate.

Services Provided 

The Mental Health Treatment Center provides: 

  • Short-term psychiatric care for people in a serious mental health crisis 
  • Crisis stabilization and clinical assessment 
  • Care coordination and referral to appropriate next levels of treatment 
  • Support for people placed on involuntary psychiatric holds (5150) 
  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week care to support emergency response needs for patients 

Care is focused on stabilization and safety, not long-term treatment.

Programs Within the Mental Health Treatment Center 

Psychiatric Health Facility 

The Psychiatric Health Facility provides inpatient psychiatric care for people who require intensive treatment in a secured setting. Services include: 

  • Short-term inpatient psychiatric treatment 
  • Care for people placed on involuntary psychiatric holds 
  • Ongoing clinical assessment and treatment planning 

Length of stay varies based on individual needs and clinical determination. 

Intake Stabilization Unit 

The Intake Stabilization Unit provides rapid assessment and short-term stabilization for adults, children, and teens experiencing a psychiatric crisis. Services include: 

  • Crisis stabilization in a secured setting 
  • Clinical evaluation and monitoring 
  • Coordination with hospitals, emergency departments, and crisis responders 
  • Support in identifying appropriate follow-up services 

The Intake Stabilization Unit operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

How People Access the Mental Health Treatment Center 

People arrive at the Mental Health Treatment Center through formal crisis pathways, including: 

  • Transport by law enforcement 
  • Referral from an emergency department 
  • Placement on an involuntary psychiatric hold 
  • Coordination with emergency mental health responders 

Admission is determined by trained professionals based on clinical and safety needs. 

Eligibility and Assessment 

There is no single set of eligibility criteria for admission. 

People served by the Mental Health Treatment Center: 

  • Are experiencing a serious psychiatric crisis 
  • Require secured, short-term stabilization 
  • Are assessed individually by qualified mental health professionals 

Decisions about care are made on a case-by-case basis and are based on clinical judgment, legal requirements, and safety considerations.
