Medication assisted treatment (MAT) helps people with opioid use disorder feel stable, reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and stay engaged in care. This outpatient treatment combines medication with counseling and behavioral health support to achieve and sustain long-term recovery and health. A qualified professional will help determine the best medication to support your recovery goals. 

MAT is a proven evidence-based approach used to help people stop using opioids and minimize withdrawal symptoms.

Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan®, is a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is safe, easy to use, and does not cause harm if opioids are not present. Available at no cost in Sacramento County.

  • People who use opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, or prescription pain medications 
  • People seeking outpatient treatment and support 
  • Family members or caregivers looking for information 
  • Community members seeking overdose prevention resources 

You do not need to be in crisis to reach out. Support is available. 

What Services Are Provided 

Medication assisted treatment includes: 

  • Prescribed medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings 
  • Counseling and behavioral health services 
  • Ongoing medical support and monitoring 
  • Connections to additional County Behavioral Health Services 

Services are coordinated through County-contracted providers. 

Outpatient Treatment That Fits Into Daily Life 

This program is offered on an outpatient basis, meaning: 

  • No overnight stays are required 
  • Treatment centers are located throughout Sacramento County  
  • Individuals can continue work, school, or family responsibilities 
  • Appointments and services are designed to support daily stability 
  • Counseling and Behavioral Health Support 

Medication works best when combined with counseling. Behavioral health services can help individuals: 

  • Manage stress and triggers 
  • Build coping strategies 
  • Set personal goals 
  • Stay connected to care 

Eligibility and Cost 

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is available to individuals with opioid use disorder 

  • Referrals are not required 
  • Services are Medi-Cal eligible  
  • Behavioral Health Services can assist with referrals if needed

How to Get Started/Take the Next Step 

There are different ways to access services – we encourage you to connect to services in a way that is most comfortable for you:

  2. Complete the Mental Health and Substance Use Request Form

    Visit a county-contracted network provider (shown below in Locations) during scheduled drop-in hours.
