Baby Behavior

Having a new baby is very exciting. It can also be a little stressful as you and your baby get to know each other.  Moms and dads at WIC tell us that learning to understand their newborn baby's behavior has been a great help to them. When you know what to expect--especially in the beginning--you can feel more relaxed and confident.

Sleeping: Frequent waking and frequent feeding can be hard for parents, but young babies need to wake often to stay safe and healthy.

Crying: Crying is one way your baby gets your attention and lets you know he or she needs your help. Think of crying as your baby's way of talking to you.

Cues: Babies show parents what they need. In the beginning, it may be hard to figure out what your baby is trying to tell you. But with practice, you will find it easier to help your baby be calm and happy.

At WIC we offer great classes for new and expectant parents where you receive lots of helpful information about baby behavior. The WIC magazine, "Getting to Know Your Newborn Baby" and the free DVD about baby behavior are also great resources. Be sure to get your copies!

Current WIC participants can also get helpful information online. Visit wichealth.org to access two different baby behavior topics. Once logged in, select the pregnant tab to learn about "Understanding Your Baby's Sleep." Select the infant tab to learn about "Understanding Your Baby's Cues." The Online Education page has full details on creating an online account. [Note: it is not necessary to e-mail a certificate to your WIC office unless you have been scheduled to complete these online activities by your WIC counselor.]

Additional helpful resources are listed below. And don't forget, you can call the WIC office at  916-876-5000 any time. We're here to help parents and babies enjoy this special time!
