Nutrition Assistant

Nutrition Assistants provide nutrition education and assistance to qualifying participants. Incumbents interview and/or assess women, infants and children to determine eligibility for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program; assess nutritional status and provide education, counseling, and referrals and other information to program participants.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are Nutrition Assistants who specialize in providing first-time WIC mothers, who are pregnant or breastfeeding their baby, with basic breastfeeding information and encouragement. Incumbents counsel mothers on how to get breastfeeding off to a good start, provide guidance on overcoming common breastfeeding challenges, triage basic breastfeeding problems, make referrals when mothers need advanced lactation care and support, and facilitate group classes and support groups.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (Part-Time) 

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is responsible for but not limited to:

• Counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, text, virtual visit, and/or in-person (once the pandemic has ended) at scheduled intervals determined by the WIC program

• Give basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers on getting breastfeeding off to a good start and guidance on overcoming common barriers to breastfeeding

• Maintain a caseload of WIC mothers and make routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned

• Facilitate monthly classes and support groups virtually

• Refer mothers needing advanced lactation care and support to WIC lactation consultants, WIC dietitians, or to their medical provider

• Meet regularly by phone or video with the PC Program Coordinator and the WIC program staff

• Respect each client by keeping her information strictly confidential

• Document contact notes in applicable program databases

Dietitian

Under general supervision, provides nutrition and dietary educational instruction, assessment and counseling to clients; may provide technical support and assistance to paraprofessionals and clerical staff.​​

Nutrition Program Coordinator

Under general direction, directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinic site or other nutrition program within WIC.  This can include providing nutritional and dietary educational instruction; assessment and counseling to clients; coordinating and integrating WIC services with other community services; and assisting in the development of WIC program policies and procedures.

Lactation Consultant (Contracted Position)

Lactation Consultant is responsible for but not limited to:

  • Conducting consultations with normal and complex lactation issues (i.e. babies with poor latch, low supply, moms with mastitis, etc.)
  • Providing phone and face to face consultations, either in the office or the mother's home
  • Training and mentoring breastfeeding support staff and WIC staff
  • Assisting with monthly in-service trainings
  • Documenting consult notes and forms in applicable program databases​
