Background

In November 2020 the County of Sacramento, Board of Supervisors and other jurisdictions across the country declared racism a public health crisis.

This first step allowed for resources to specifically address racism, more specifically the social determinants of health contributing to existing health disparities in Sacramento County.

The Health and Racial Equity Unit (HRE)

In April 2022, the Department of Health Services established a Health and Racial Equity Unit (HRE) within the Public Health division.

The HRE Unit works to expand and build health and racial equity programs, policies, and practices throughout Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH) to educate, eliminate, mitigate, and prevent existing and future health disparities and inequities that BIPOC and underserved communities face in Sacramento County.

The HRE Unit leads with race because racial inequities persist in every system including healthcare, education, criminal justice, employment, etc. When considering other dimensions of identity such as income, gender, sexuality, education, ability, age, citizenship, and geography, there are racial inequities.

Knowing this helps the HRE team take an intersectional approach while naming the role that race plays in people's experiences and outcomes.
