Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Services provide assessment and treatment for people experiencing challenges related to alcohol or other drug use. These services support people at different stages of recovery and are designed to meet people where they are. 

Care is provided by licensed or certified substance use disorder treatment providers in community-based settings.

What Substance Use Disorder
Outpatient Services Do 

Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Services help people address a
wide range of substance use concerns through structured, supportive care. 

Services may include: 

  • Intake and assessment 
  • Treatment planning 
  • Individual counseling 
  • Group counseling 
  • Support for family and loved ones 
  • Education and recovery support 
  • Medication services when appropriate 
  • Crisis intervention and discharge planning 

A provider completes an assessment and works with the individual to determine the most appropriate level of care.

People can access Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Services in several ways. 
No referral is required to start the process.

Types of Outpatient Services 

There are two main types of outpatient substance use disorder treatment. Both provide similar services, but the amount of time per week differs. 

Outpatient Services 

Outpatient Services provide structured treatment for people who need support while continuing daily responsibilities such as work, school, or family care. 

  • Services are typically provided up to nine hours per week for adults 
  • Youth may receive up to six hours per week
  • Services may be provided in person, by phone, or through telehealth 

Intensive Outpatient Services 

These services provide a higher level of support for people who need more frequent treatment. 

  • Adults may receive nine to nineteen hours per week 
  • Youth may receive six to nineteen hours per week 
  • Services are still community-based and do not require overnight stays 
  • Services may be provided in person, by phone, or through telehealth 
  • A provider helps determine whether outpatient or intensive outpatient services are the best fit. 

Types of Substance Use Addressed 

Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Services support people experiencing challenges related to many substances, including: 

  • Alcohol 
  • Cannabis/marijuana 
  • Opioids such as prescription pain medications or fentanyl 
  • Stimulants such as methamphetamine or cocaine 
  • Sedatives Hallucinogens 
  • Inhalants 
  • Other substances 

You do not need to know the exact diagnosis to seek help. A provider will complete an assessment and guide next steps. 

Eligibility Requirements 

To receive Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Services, individuals must: 

1. Be a resident of Sacramento County

 

2. Be eligible for Medi-Cal 

 

If someone is not currently enrolled in Medi-Cal, staff can help with the enrollment process. 

Services are available for: 

  • Youth 
  • Transitional age youth 
  • Adults 
  • Older adults 
  • People who are pregnant or new parents
